Southwest Florida has become one of the fastest-growing regions in the country. Every year thousands of people relocate here looking for sunshine, waterfront living, and a slower pace of life. For many, it turns out to be exactly what they hoped for.

But something interesting also happens.

Some people move to Southwest Florida… and within a few years they move again.

As someone who has lived in this area since I was six years old and has helped buyers and sellers navigate the local market since 2011, I’ve seen this pattern firsthand. Most of the time, the move itself wasn’t the problem — it was expectations that didn’t fully match reality.

Here are a few of the most common reasons people end up relocating again after moving to Southwest Florida.

They Didn’t Realize How Different the Summers Feel

Winter in Southwest Florida is incredible. That’s one of the main reasons so many people move here in the first place. From roughly November through April, the weather is beautiful, dry, and sunny.

But summers are a different story.

From June through September, temperatures often reach the 90s with high humidity and frequent afternoon storms. Many new residents who first visit during the winter months are surprised by how different the climate feels during the summer.

Most locals adapt quickly, but for some people the seasonal change is more intense than expected.

They Chose the Wrong Area for Their Lifestyle

Southwest Florida isn’t just one place. The lifestyle can vary significantly depending on where you live.

For example:

• Cape Coral offers miles of canals, boating access, and quieter residential neighborhoods.

• Fort Myers has more urban amenities, restaurants, and job centers.

• Pine Island and Matlacha offer a slower, Old Florida island lifestyle.

Some canals offer direct Gulf access with no bridges. Others may have bridge restrictions or longer travel times before reaching open water. Some areas have faster boating access while others require longer idle zones.

For boating enthusiasts, these details can make a big difference in everyday enjoyment of the home.

Most People Who Move Here Love It

Even though some people move again, the majority of buyers who relocate to Southwest Florida end up loving the lifestyle.

The key is understanding the region before buying — including climate, insurance costs, commute times, waterfront access, and neighborhood differences.
